500,000 elderly await nursing homes
A new survey shows more than 500,000 elderly Japanese await placement in intensive care nursing homes.
Japanese health officials said today (Tuesday) the number is up by 100,000 from the last time people were surveyed in 2009.
Officials say the number of nursing care providers has grown by about 75,000.
But they say there still aren’t enough staff and facilities to accommodate Japan’s rising numbers of elderly.
Japan has the world’s fastest-aging society, with a quarter of the population over 65.
