Amid cherry blossoms, signs of spring
People in Japan are enjoying the first signs of spring.
“Kawazu-zakura” south of Tokyo is known for the first cherry blossoms to reach areas near the capital. In most cities in Japan, they bloom in early April.
Cherry blossom festivals are a traditional feature of spring in Japan.
Local tourist officials here enhance the scenery with an event called “Shooting Stars: Nighttime Cherry Blossoms.”
5,000 illuminated balls are released into a nearby river. The special balls emit a bluish white light when exposed to water.
Visitors can enjoy the magical scenery each evening through March 9th.
