Japan, Australia seal free trade deal
Japan and Australia have agreed on a broad free trade deal.
Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott was in Tokyo to meet Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The economic partnership agreement will see tariffs on Aussie beef cut from 38.5% to about 20%.
Australia agreed to eliminate 5% tariffs on Japanese automobiles.
The two countries also discussed cutting tariffs on Aussie dairy products or expanding a special category to allow imports of a certain amount of lower-taxed products.
Japan may also put in place import safeguards to protect Japanese livestock farmers from a surge of Australian beef.
The two countries aren’t expected to sign the agreement until next year at the earliest.
