Japan bans possession of child pornography

Japan’s parliament voted to ban possession of child pornography today.

The vote came after over a decade of international pressure.

Japan outlawed production and distribution of child porn in 1999, but the nation was still a haven for buyers of child pornography.

Statistics show child porn remains a serious issue in Japan.

Japan’s police say cases involving child porno are up significantly in recent years.

Under the revised law people who possess child porn will face maximum imprisonment of one year or a fine of up to one million yen.

But lawmakers who wrote the bill did not criminalize possession of pornographic anime or manga.
