Japan cuts tariffs on Aussie beef tongue and pork
The many fans of beef tongue in Japan have cause for cheer.
Japan’s government is cutting tariffs on beef tongue and pork under a trade deal with Australia.
Japan and Australia signed an Economic Partnership Agreement when Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott met his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe last week in Tokyo.
The deal will see tariffs on Aussie beef tongue cut from 12.8% to about 7.6%. Tariffs on Aussie pork will be lowered from 4.3% to 2.2%.
Japan will impose a ceiling on imports to prevent a surge in Aussie products. It will be relaxed step by step.
Japanese officials say the impact on livestock farmers should be temporary.
Aussie beef accounts for 40% of imported beef tongue products in Japan. Prices are expected to fall in the near future.
Japan and the U.S. will try to seal their own trade deal when President Barack Obama visits Tokyo next week.
