Japan Post gets green light for education insurance
Japan’s giant post office, which doubles as a bank, is moving further into insurance, one area where American firms have had a lot of success in the country.
Japan Post Insurance officially received government approval on Friday to begin selling education insurance.
The savings-oriented insurance product can be purchased when a child is born and pay for their college tuition even if the parents die before the child reaches college age.
Washington apparently backed down from concerns over state-owned Japan Post’s encroachment on the insurance sector after last year’s cancer insurance collaboration with US firm Aflac.
Insurance is one of the key areas under discussion between the US and Japan at the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade talks.
