Japan’s EEZ could grow thanks to new volcano island
A new volcanic island in the Pacific is growing so large, it could boost the size of Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
The island south of Tokyo thrust above sea level two months ago and continues to erupt forcefully.
New footage shot today (Thursday) by Japan’s NTV shows fresh lava flowing from the caldera.
Japan Coast Guard officials say the island is getting so big it may expand the size of Japan’s exclusive economic waters.
Japan’s EEZ borders the new island to the west and could grow by several square kilometers based on the island’s new dimensions.
A volcano expert says lava should continue to flow and possibly even cover an older adjacent island.
