Kennedy: Japanese women key to economy
Japanese women’s rights are getting a boost from Caroline Kennedy.
The U.S. Ambassador to Japan spoke at an event organized by a U.S. military base in Tokyo.
The speech drew more than 300 people.
Kennedy said, “It’s recognized that women are the key to Japanese economic recovery and to a more dynamic and creative society.”
Japan’s first woman in space Chiaki Mukai was invited on stage by the American diplomat.
People in Japan have been fascinated by Caroline Kennedy since she became the first U.S. woman ambassador last fall.
“For me personally this is an important day,” Kennedy said. “As the first woman to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Japan I know that people are watching me too.”
