Kumagaya embraces heat, erects giant thermometer
A city in Japan is making the best of a sticky situation.
Kumagaya has a reputation for being Japan’s hottest place.
The city in central Japan regularly records temperatures of over 40 degrees centigrade.
Along with a new catchphrase, “Kumagaya—it’s hot!” the town installed a giant thermometer in front of a train station.
Kumagaya is vying for the title of Japan’s steamiest city with Shimanto in western Japan.
Shimanto edged it by 0.1 degree last summer, and has its own PR campaign with the motto “Japan’s hottest city.”
