Japan’s midsummer vacation - known as "obon" - is underway, with millions of people heading either back to their hometowns or to a holiday destination.

Bullet train platforms at Tokyo Station were packed on Wednesday with passengers heading west and towards northeastern Japan.

Those heading out of Tokyo by car will have to be patient.

More than 40 kilometers of traffic jams were already reported outside the capital as of noon on Wednesday.
