New device offsets seismic shaking
Engineers in Japan have taken the wraps off a new device designed to cut the shaking of skyscrapers in earthquakes.
Engineers at Kajima Construction showed reporters how the 300-ton weight system works today (Tuesday) at a test center outside Tokyo.
The weight swings like a pendulum in the opposite direction of seismic vibrations.
Kajima says the device can cut shaking by up to 60 percent.
The first building to be outfitted with the system will be a skyscraper in central Tokyo’s Shinjuku district.
Japan is one of the world’s most seismically active nations. A 9.0 earthquake triggered a tsunami that killed thousands and set off the meltdowns at Fukushima in 2011.
