Prince Katsura dead at 66
Japan’s Prince Katsura died of heart failure at a hospital in Tokyo yesterday (Sunday) morning.
The 66-year-old prince was a cousin to Emperor Akihito. He had been unwell in recent years but continued to take an active role in public service.
Members of Japan’s imperial family have been visiting the prince's residence, where his body lies in state.
Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko paid their respects on Sunday.
When a member of Japan’s imperial family dies, a number of rituals occur.
One of the first took place Monday evening when Katsura’s body was placed in a coffin.
The public will be able to sign a condolence book starting Tuesday.
The funeral takes place June 17th in Tokyo.
