Riken nixes new probe for Obokata
A disgraced stem cell researcher in Japan will not receive a new probe into her case.
Japan’s Riken institute on Thursday rejected a request by Dr. Haruko Obokata to reinvestigate her case.
Riken officials upheld their judgment that Obokata falsified findings on a revolutionary new way to produce stem cells. They also urged Obokata to retract her research paper.
The committee said new documents submitted by Obokata were insufficient to merit a new probe.
Obokata gained fame when she claimed to have developed an easy new way to produce stem cells.
Obokata’s lawyer expressed disappointment with the decision and said his client would consider her legal options.
Riken will set up a disciplinary committee to discuss possible punishment for Obokata.
Observers are also focused on how the journal Nature will react. The journal published Obokata’s research in January.
