Taiji whalers land first haul of the season
Whalers in western Japan have brought in their first catch of the season.
Ships near the whaling town of Taiji caught two five-meter-long whales yesterday (Sunday).
It’s their first catch since the season began May 1.
The World Court prohibited Japan from whaling in the Antarctic Ocean in March.
Small-type coastal whaling in Japan is not covered by that injunction or International Whaling Commission regulations.
Ships near Taiji will continue whaling into next month.
The meat will be sold at supermarkets and restaurants, mostly in western Japan.
