Typhoon Neoguri heads for Kyushu
A powerful typhoon has lashed Japan’s prefecture of Okinawa, injuring 28 people and causing landslides in 35 locations.
Typhoon Neoguri brought torrential rains and winds of more than 200 kilometers per hour to the prefecture.
Air traffic and ferry services were partially restored on Wednesday.
An alert remains in place due to extremely heavy downpours. Some areas have received a cumulated 400 millimeters of rain over the past 24 hours.
The storm is now closing in on the island of Kyushu, where it’s expected to make landfall on Thursday.
But the storm system combined with the seasonal rain front still prevailing over Japan is already producing heavy downpours one thousand kilometers away in Niigata prefecture.
Authorities there are also warning residents against the danger of floods and landslides over the coming days.
