Typhoon Neoguri slams Okinawa, heading north
Powerful typhoon Neoguri is currently west of Japan’s southern Okinawa island and heading north toward the Japanese mainland.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued storm warnings for Okinawa, Miyakojima and parts of southern Japan.
Authorities say they expect 140 mph winds and 14-meter waves in some parts of Okinawa.
The government has mandated evacuation for over 50,000 people on Okinawa and another 55,000 people on the island of Miyakojima.
22,000 households in Okinawa were without power this morning.
All airports and public schools in Okinawa are closed.
The typhoon is expected to hit southern Kyushu on Thursday.
