Waseda probes science theses in wake of stem cell scandal
An elite Japan university is probing all scientific doctoral theses in the wake of a scandal over stem cell research.
Waseda University’s Graduate School of Advanced Science launched the investigation after alumni Haruko Obokata was found to have falsified a paper on a new way to create stem cells.
Waseda officials say they will examine about 280 PhD theses, and if fraud is found, the university will consider revoking students’ degrees.
Skeptics have posted comments online questioning other doctoral papers by Waseda graduates.
Meanwhile, Obokata is scheduled to hold a press conference to defend her research on Wednesday.
She was reportedly admitted to a hospital today (Monday) with symptoms of mental and physical instability.
