American capitol, Japanese trains
The American capitol has new, Japanese-made trains running on its Metro tracks.
Made by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, the stainless steel cars are customized with extra seats and feature monitors that display travel information in real time.
Kawasaki has a one-billion-dollar contract to deliver 528 train cars.
DC Mayor Vincent Gray attended the launch, as did the resident Japanese ambassador, who called the train cars “a symbol of trust between the two nations.”
US transport officials are reassessing the role of rail travel in commerce at a time when Japan is pushing its train technology, including its super high-speed maglev train.
