Japanese firm sued in China over forced labor
A group of 149 people in China are taking legal action against a Japanese company. They’re demanding compensation for their alleged use as forced labor during World War II.
The lawsuit is the largest of its kind to date in China. It targets Mitsubishi Materials Corporation, one of the core companies of the giant Japanese conglomerate.
The plaintiffs demand about 37 million dollars in compensation, as well as a formal apology.
In a show of solidarity, former forced laborers from South Korea travelled to China to meet with the plaintiffs. A lawyer for the group says they want to share their experience with their Chinese counterparts.
South Korean courts have already ruled several times in favor of forced laborers and ordered Japanese companies to pay damages.
Speaking in Tokyo, a Japanese government spokesperson rejected the claims of the lawsuit. He said all compensation issues have already been settled through a joint declaration signed with China in 1972.
