Park agrees to meet Abe: sources
Despite troubled relations, the president of South Korea is apparently now ready to meet Japan’s prime minister for the first time.
The meeting would take place at a trilateral summit between South Korea, Japan and the United States.
It would be South Korean President Park Geun-hye’s first formal meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Park has refused to meet with Abe because of his stance on World War Two war crimes.
Japan’s NTV says America’s push as well as Abe’s recent statement upholding an official apology by Japan to South Korea nudged Park to agree to the meeting.
North Korea will be the main subject at the talks likely to take place in the Hague on the 24th of this month.
All parties will be present for the Nuclear Security Summit 2014.
Japan’s Abe said just the fact of the meeting in and of itself could be considered a diplomatic success.
