The Japanese Federation of the Deaf (JFD) has presented Nippon Television Network Corporation (NTV) with a certificate of appreciation for its extended closed captioning broadcast (displaying the audio portion of the television program as text on the screen) during special emergency news programming covering the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Immediately following the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11th, NTV continuously broadcast closed-captioned news for 25 consecutive hours from 17:00 March 11th through 18:00 March 12th. JFD commented, "During a time when the only means of obtaining information during the earthquake was from television, the fact that continuous closed-captioned news was being broadcast immediately after the earthquake served to provide valuable information to the hearing impaired." JFD highly commended NTV's efforts to offer barrier-free information in a time of disaster by broadcasting the longest, uninterrupted closed-captioned news of all the broadcasters.

In addition to fortifying measures in the event of emergency situations, NTV plans to further enhance and improve closed-captioning, which will continue to play a vital role, as full transition to digital broadcasting takes place on July 24th.
